Where we are up to

An Aboriginal Impact Assessment Discussion Paper was prepared outlining the processes and scope of existing impact assessment regimes operating in Victoria, as well as those in other Australian and international jurisdictions. This was updated to reflect the gender impact assessment process implemented in Victoria and racial equity impact assessment processes used in other countries. Members of the Aboriginal Justice Caucus will consider these findings as work progresses. Preparation of an Aboriginal Impact Assessment is likely to be trialled as part of an upcoming reparations project.

Background

Reducing Aboriginal over representation in the justice system requires greater consideration of the impacts of new legislation and legislation already in place. Through the development of Burra Lotjpa Dunguludja, phase four of the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement, the Aboriginal Justice Forum partnership has committed to ensuring that Aboriginal people are not disproportionately worse off under policies and legislation, by ensuring that disproportionate impacts are identified and remedied during their development.
