Burra Lotjpa Dunguludja provided funding to expand the Aboriginal Community Justice Panels (ACJP) to five additional locations. The expansion is underway and will result in a total of 18 ACJP sites by 2021-2022.
A review of the ACJP service model was conducted to explore program enhancements, including stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and resourcing. The report was due to be released in October 2022.
Background
The ACJP was established in 1988 in response to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. The ACJP operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week across 13 locations. The program is supported by volunteers who provide cultural and practical support to Aboriginal people in police custody. In 2018 at the launch of Burra Lotjpa Dunguludja the previous Attorney-General committed additional funding to expand the ACJP to five additional locations. The additional five locations will result in a total of 18 ACJPs across Victoria by 2021–2022.
