Where we are up to

The Mildura Magistrates’ Koori Court commenced hearing contraventions of intervention order matters in May 2019. Implementation of this project (which responds to recommendation 150 from the Royal Commission into Family Violence) in Mildura will be supported by a solicitor recruited by the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, and a senior lawyer recruited by Djirra, who will be working with Aboriginal court clients experiencing family violence.

The Pilot Project for the expansion of the Koori Court to hear contravention of intervention order matter has been extended to the end of June 2021 to reflect the cessation of the Koori Court during the COVID-19 pandemic. The associated evaluation has also been extended to be completed by June 2021. As of April 2020, the Koori Courts in Mildura have heard 33 matters involving a contravention of an intervention order.

Further information about the Koori Courts can be accessed from the Magistrates' Court of Victoria website (External link).
